The Sports Museum - Celebrating the Character (and Characters) of Boston Sports

The Sports Museum's Facebook Notes

The Sports Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution housed in the TD Garden that has served Boston and New England for the past 30 years.

At The Sports Museum, we celebrate the character of Boston sports -- the unique brand of teamwork, determination, responsibility, courage, fairness, and other qualities of character possessed by our teams and athletes that make Boston "The Greatest Sports City in America." Equally important, we use this distinctly rich heritage to help build character in kids so that they can stand strong in the face of drugs, violence, and other dangers.

The 2010 Will McDonough Writing Contest

The Sports Museum is now accepting entries for The 2010 Will McDonough Writing Contest. Students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to apply and celebrate another great year in Boston sports. The contest (the sixth annual) is named in honor of the long-time Boston Globe sports columnist. It is designed to encourage the development of language and writing skills while incorporating the topic of sports and such concepts as teamwork, responsibility, fairness, courage and determination.

Students enter the contest by submitting an essay on one of several topics. Essays will be judged on topic development, organization, style and mechanics. The Sports Museum is asking for parents and teachers to let their students know about The 2010 Will McDonough Writing Contest. Applications and guidelines can be downloaded off The Sports Museum's website here. The deadline for submission is March 2, 2010. The winners will be announced via The Sports Museum's website on March 19.

First place winners will take part in an award ceremony at The Sports Museum within the TD Garden and attend the Boston Celtics game on March 31. If you have any questions about The 2010 Will McDonough Writing Contest, please contact Michelle Gormley at (617) 624-1233 or mgormley@dncboston.com.

The past year has brought many memorable examples of determination, teamwork, courage, fairness and responsibility for students to write about. We look forward to reading this year's essays. Supported by Bank of America.
